Communication Over Time

I.    Goals - Students will develop an understanding of how human communication has evolved over time and how this communication development has impacted human cultural development.

II.    Essential Questions

     A.    How has the growth of human communication affected the development of cultures?

     B.    How has the development of various forms of communication resulted in a positive and negative manner?

     C.    How will communication impact life in the future?

     D.    Why/How? have some forms of communication had a greater impact on human interaction than others?

III.    Understandings

     A.    Students will be familiar

          1.    with how some cultures were greatly changed by the introduction/invention of a new form of communication

          2.    with the advantages and disadvantages of some of the forms of communication

          3.    with important communication vocabulary

     B.    Students will understand

          1.    that there is a correlation between both the growth of cultures and the growth of communication.

          2.    that communication has and continues to evolve

     C.    Students will know

          1.    the major turning points in communication development

          2.    the names and basic information on at least 4 forms of communication

     D.    Students will be able to

          1.    research for relevant information

          2.    transfer their knowledge to an audience of peers
